OVERVIEW

The listener wakes again in the same unknown location. Adam insists that he’s bored and hungry, and that he plans to fix both of those things with the listener. He again mocks the listener and reinforces that he doesn’t care about them or their long-term survival. He reveals that, though the listener has been crying out for Vincent, Adam had already thought of that, and is now using his Trance to alter the words that they say; when they try to say “No”, their mouth says “Yes”, “Stop” becomes “More”, “Help” becomes “Please”, “Vincent” becomes “Adam”. He tells the listener to say his name again, but they stay silent. He tells them that that’ll change before long.

He mocks the listener’s frustration and Vincent’s willingness to believe that established customs would be enough to keep Adam away from them. He then reveals that, despite the Clan’s belief that he was a feral, freshly turned newborn when they found him, unaware of his Maker, Adam in fact knew her and learned a lot from her before killing her. The act of draining her and consuming all her blood left him in a state of feral intoxication that was mistaken for the bloodlust by the Clan when they took him in, and he kept up the illusion to have an upper hand on them. One of the things he had learned from his Maker was the ability to remain undetected, which he employed to kidnap the listener. He also reveals that they’re in a hideout of his making beneath Wonderworld, and he jokes that Vincent is likely right above them, unaware.

Adam notes the listener’s furious look of frustration, but jokes that its ultimately meaningless, because of their lack of power. He then bites them, pausing in the midst of it to insist that they say his name while he does. They initially refuse, and Adam enters a rage, saying that they can try to say Vincent’s name for all he cares, because it comes out the same. But that if they want to survive the night, they will say his name.

He notices that the listener’s fist is shaking, and while that’s a surprising display of resistance to the Trance, he points out that it’s not enough to matter, and he threatens the listener with a blackout as he moves in for another bite. Suddenly, electric magic bursts forth from the listener and throws Adam to the far wall of the room. Stunned, he attempts to attack the listener, who again shocks him away. Before he can make another move, the sound of wood splintering in the distance signals Vincent’s arrival. He rushes into the room and unceremoniously kills Adam by tearing his head off. Adam’s body disintegrates into bone and ash. Vincent rushes over to the listener, relieved at their safety but terrified at the state they’re in. He clarifies that whatever wards Adam had in place, blocking all sound from escaping, came down when he was attacked by the listener, allowing Vincent to then find them. Vincent is stunned to hear that the listener exhibited magical abilities, but confirms that they need to get the listener help before they speak any further. He rushes them away.

TRIVIA

  • The titular fight actually only lasts a matter of seconds, further emphasizing that Adam is woefully outclassed by Vincent’s power, even when fueled by the listener’s empowered blood.

  • The listener’s powers manifest for the first time, revealing them to be an Electro-Energetic, though those powers remain unnamed thus far.

  • It is revealed that Adam is not in fact a juvinate, but an established Vampire who knew his Maker and learned a lot from her before killing her. Her identity is never revealed.

  • First instance of ‘onscreen’ character death.

  • Final canonical appearance of Adam in the Prime Universe.
