OVERVIEW

Vincent greets the listener with a “welcome home”, then notes that it feels odd to phrase it that way, since no one else has ever called his place home, though he is happy that they now do. He asks how it went with the leasing office of their old apartment. It becomes clear that the listener asked to move in with him after feeling unsafe in their apartment, and they now live in a guest room in Vincent’s home. He jokes that, with the relationship effectively reset, in a sense, they’re now just roommates.

He asks how their day went— after settling with their apartment leasing office, they went to Dahlia Academy for Magical Novices. Vincent mentions that he hasn’t been there in years; “feeders” (Vampires and Demons) aren’t supposed to use it as ‘hunting ground’, and in general there is a stigma at the academy toward them, with some members of the staff feeling that it’s unsafe for them to be in classes with “non-feeders”. The listener talks about their guidance counselor, who they found helpful, and express excitement at their upcoming class load.

Vincent mentions that he never finished college as a human, having been turned in his third year of study. He reiterates that he was generally discouraged from pursuing a magical education at the academy by his fellow Vampires, who felt it was a waste of time, though when Sam joined the Clan, it briefly revitalized his interest in it. But ultimately he never pursued it.

They discuss the listener’s meeting with a therapist at the academy as well. The listener confirms that they feel the therapist is a good fit, and that they have a regular schedule of meetings ahead, though for now they’re primarily talking about their Latency, rather than the incident with Adam. Vincent mentions that he spoke to William in the wake of all this; he reveals that their relationship initially was a very close one, with William taking his responsibilities as a Maker very seriously, but before long Vincent’s resentment at the prospect of his future, one which was chosen for him without his say, drove a wedge between Maker and Progeny. This incident has brought them closer together again, which feels good, if complicated. But he and William trust each other, and for Vincent, that’s enough.

Vincent then confesses that he also spent part of his day getting in touch with the academy himself. He feels that had he learned more magic in the past, the incident might have been prevented, and he wants to make sure something like that can never happen again, so he’s pursuing a magical education at the academy. The listener supports the decision, and Vincent thanks them, but reasserts that tonight is not about him, it’s about them and their first day in the magical world. He laments his nocturnal nature keeping him from being with them throughout the day, but promises to be there for them in any way that he can.

The listener had previously stated that keeping busy was helping them, and Vincent suggests that a way of doing that would be to make dinner together. His kitchen is well stocked, and though as a Vampire he doesn’t get any sustenance from human food, he enjoyed cooking before he was Turned. They adjourn to the kitchen, excited.

TRIVIA

  • Lasko is heavily implied to be the listener’s guidance counselor.

  • William and Vincent’s relationship is explored in more depth, and through it, the complicated nuances of the Progeny/Maker relationship are also touched on with some detail for the first time.

  • Officially marks the start of both the listener’s and Vincent’s magical educations at the Dahlia Academy for Magical Novices.

  • It’s confirmed here that Vampires do not need human food and that it provides no sustenance, but that it also can be eaten with no ill effects, in a similar way to D(a)emons.
