OVERVIEW
The listener wakes up in their apartment at 2 AM with Vincent beside their bed. He asks if they’re suffering any aftereffects from the feeding, but they tell him they are not. They ask Vincent if he’s all right, and while he initially agrees, he soon admits that he’s actually not, and hasn’t been since they met. He relays that he was turned twenty years prior and hasn’t experienced the Bloodlust since the start of that, but that around the listener he feels like when he was freshly turned, struggling to control himself. He can’t understand the hold they have over him, and perhaps more worryingly, he isn’t particularly bothered at the thought of being ensnared by them, which is concerning in its own right.
He assures the listener that their blood has sated him and that they aren’t in any danger of another bite. He further states that if it ever happens again, it will never be like that time, and he apologizes profusely. They forgive him easily, but Vincent tells them to hold off until they have the full story. He confesses that they deserved a much better explanation than what he had given thus far, and that he plans to give them that explanation now. He confirms that they now believe in Vampires, and outlines the basics of how real world Vampires work: he drinks blood to survive, and while it doesn’t have to be human, he prefers it. Vampires generally don’t drain people to the point of death, and he certainly never has. The sun burns him and would kill him eventually, though it isn’t an instant process. He can’t turn into a bat, and he can enter a home without being invited.
He discusses Trancing, mentioning that it’s one of their powers and that most use it to feed and obscure a person’s memory so that they can maintain their cover. It relies on the victim first making eye contact. He explains that Marking is like claiming a person as their own, and is optionally done as part of the bite to ward other Vampires away. Vincent had not yet Marked the listener because he wasn’t ready to feed on them yet, and that lack of a Mark was why he had wanted the listener to avoid Wonderworld, as that was the Clan’s den and to go there without a Mark made them fair game. That loophole is the only reason he allowed Adam to live, since technically, by Vampire customs, he had every right to do what he did. Vincent then states though that had Adam bitten the listener, no customs would have prevented Vincent from ending Adam. He further explains that he is the third in command of the entire Clan, and that Adam is nothing more than a trigger-happy juvinate; no one would have questioned Vincent’s decision.
The listener explains that Adam said Vincent was a “nobody” in the Clan, which Vincent finds absurd. He threatens to rip Adam’s head off for the disrespect alone. Vincent clarifies again that he is third in command, as the second Progeny of William, their King. Only Alexis, William’s first Progeny, has more power in the Clan than him. She was turned nearly fifty years prior, and she was considered such a hellion that William swore he would never turn another. Alexis tends to call Vincent a mistake. William prefers “happy accident”, as a fan of Bob Ross. Vincent further explains that all other Vampires in the clan come from different lineages, and that Adam doesn’t even know his Maker; he was found nearly feral in the woods near Wonderworld, and the Clan took him in. Vincent believes there’s been something wrong with him ever since, and further believes that he had problems even back when he was a human, but redirects the conversation to less upsetting topics.
He confirms that the listener is now Marked, and so will not be touched by any member of the Clan, though he advises that they should still stay away from the park. He promises not to disappear again, and the listener promises not to go there alone again.
Vincent asks if the bite points hurt, while confirming that they shouldn’t, since he’s well practiced. He asks if they enjoyed it, adding that most people do when it’s done properly. The listener replies that they did, and while that makes Vincent happy, he insists that they wait before trying it again. The listener needs time to recover. He adds that they tasted magnificent.
After further flirtations, Vincent says once more that they need time to recover, and that he’ll make it worth the wait. He asks that they try to get some sleep, and that they dream of him.
